I am constantly amazed by the variety of enthusiastic Mono Lake supporters that frequent our store. Some bound up the steps, excited to see that the phalaropes have arrived and are swimming around at South Tufa. Others stop abruptly in the doorway, inhale deeply, and exclaim, “I’ve missed the smell of this store!” Of course, there is always the visitor who silently peruses the bookshelves for the latest Dave Carle novel. In my three summers in the store, I would say in general, our visitors make me smile.
Last Thursday was no exception.
A rather soft-spoken young boy walked up, and as I leaned over the counter to talk to him, I noticed he was carrying a violin case. Of course I had to inquire.
“I came in to play for Mono Lake,” said Jasper, quietly enough that I had to look at his mom to figure out what he meant.
“He wants to play his violin for donations for Mono Lake,” said mom. “Where do you want us?”
Never having hosted a musician in the store, I had to think for a moment before putting Jasper in the front doorway (the front entrance was closed for the day due to construction). People were stopping on the sidewalk outside to listen, and everyone in the store gathered to enjoy and clap after each song.
As Jasper’s nerves slowly melted away, his donation cup—a Mono Lake Committee member mug—filled up with money for Mono Lake!
Visitors and staff alike were thrilled both by his excellent musical talent and by his kind, thoughtful donation to the lake.
