The Mono Lake Committee invites you to submit photographs for the 2017 Mono Lake Calendar—we are seeking photographs of the highest caliber that capture the spirit and reflect the unique qualities of Mono Lake and the Mono Basin.

We are looking for: images of scenes within the watershed boundary of Mono Lake, and possible subjects include, but are not limited to: plants, geologic features, streams, mountains, weather, fall colors, wildlife, and aerials. Images of sand tufa will not be considered due to the degradation affecting these features. Where possible, images identifiable within the context of Mono Lake’s and/or the Mono Basin’s unique scenic beauty will receive preference. In striving to represent the natural beauty of Mono Lake, images that are obviously or heavily filtered or manipulated will not be considered.
Since 1986, the magnificent geological and ecological wonders of Mono Lake have been celebrated in the Mono Lake Calendar, published by the Mono Lake Committee. Sales of the calendar help to fund the Committee’s work to protect and restore both the lake and the Mono Basin. The Mono Lake Calendar has been widely acclaimed for its artistic merit, due in large measure to the talent of the photographers whose work is represented. Each year, the calendar has been published according to exacting standards of artistic, photographic, and manufacturing excellence.

Will you be changing the year to 2017 within the Non-exclusive License Agreement that still has 2016? Or is that no big deal for you
Hey Don — Oh no! We’ve updated the submission form now — so the link is updated. I’m sorry about that oversight — we’ve got a lot of new moving pieces here, and appreciate both the heads-up and your patience. In case any photographers are reading this and wondering if the forms they used are valid, yes, they are — it was our mistake!

Please give the Mono Lake watershed boundaries. Explain why tufa photos are not considered. If they are in a background, will that disqualify them?

Hi Mari–
The watershed boundaries of the Mono Basin are roughly Conway Summit and the crest of the Bodie Hills to the north; the crest of the Sierra Nevada to the west; Deadman Summit to the south; and Sagehen Summit and the Anchorite Mountains to the east. The watershed includes the June Lake Loop and the Tioga Pass area, but does not include Bodie.
Tufa photos are very much encouraged — we don’t accept photos of SAND tufa, which is a different structure than regular tufa.
