A road is barely visible between huge piles of plowed snow, and stretches into a completely white mountainous landscape.

Atmospheric river drops more than FOUR feet of snow in Lee Vining

Today’s Mono Lake Moment shows the first glimpse at the epic atmospheric river snow totals in Lee Vining, featuring the Mono Lake Committee Information Center & Bookstore under a big load of snow.

It started snowing on the night of Tuesday, January 26 and just kept coming. By Thursday evening, over 50 inches of snow had piled up … that’s more than four feet! Highway 395 was closed from Bishop to the Nevada state line for two days and our little community dug itself out diligently. Folks helped their neighbors dig out their cars, volunteers shoveled the Lee Vining Volunteer Fire Department driveway, and friends helped dig out a family’s house who escaped to Bishop before the storm to have a baby, so they could come home to a cleared driveway and a safe path to their door. And yes, there were many snowball fights!
