For Immediate Release

Each year at the California Conference on Tourism, the California Trade and Commerce Agency, Division of Tourism (Cal Tour) honors CaliforniaBest Ecotourism Program Award and Co-winner for Best Website for 1999 companies and individuals for excellence in travel and tourism marketing and management.

The Mono Lake Committee was chosen to receive the Best Ecotourism Program award, and as co-winner of the Best Website award for 1999. The awards were presented at the California Conference on Travel and Tourism in Sacramento this past week.

"We’re particularly pleased with the awards since we developed our education program and website in-house," said Geoff McQuilkin, Assistant Executive Director of the Mono Lake Committee, which spearheaded protection of the Eastern Sierra’s Mono Lake.

The nonprofit Mono Lake Committee offers a diverse Education Program to introduce people to the ecological wonders of Mono Lake. The Program includes interpretive walks and canoe tours, field seminars, volunteer bird counts, educational publications, and an outdoor education program for inner-city youth from Los Angeles. Approximately 100,000 visitors annually participate in some aspect of the Education Program.

"We give people the opportunity to discover Mono Lake in a new way, beyond the traditional recreation opportunities in the Eastern Sierra," says Bartshe Miller, Education Program Director. "People leave with a deeper understanding of this unique ecosystem and an appreciation for the source of their drinking water."

The Committee’s Website reaches an even greater audience, including visitors to Mono Lake, Yosemite National Park, and the Eastern Sierra; researchers, students, and individuals interested in information about Mono Lake and efforts to protect it; birders; and people interested in water conservation issues.

The website includes a Lee Vining Chamber of Commerce section (leevining.com) as a service to visitors and to the Lee Vining community.

You can visit the award winning website at www.monolake.org, and for more information about the Mono Lake Committee’s Education Program contact Bartshe Miller at (760) 647-6595.

The Mono Lake Committee is a non-profit citizen’s group dedicated to protecting and restoring the Mono Basin ecosystem; educating the public about Mono Lake and the impacts on the environment of excessive water use; and, promoting cooperative solutions that protect Mono Lake and meet real water needs without transferring environmental problems to other areas.
