For Immediate Release

The Mono Lake Committee hosted an international delegation on June 12 and 13 as part of the launching of an Internet partnership called "Living Lakes." The goal of the partnership is to electronically share information and experience about lake and watershed conservation—and environmentally friendly economic development —among groups around the world dedicated to lake protection.

The delegation included: Dr. Gerhard Thielcke, President of the Global Nature Fund and former head of the Max Planck Institute in Germany; representatives from Lake St. Lucia in South Africa, Lake La Nava in Spain, and Lake Constance, which is bordered by Germany, Switzerland, and Austria; and Mr. Fritz Brickwedde of the German National Foundation for the Environment. Called away from the trip at the last minute was Mrs. Sue Meeson, from Unilver NV, a multinational company that is sponsoring the start-up of the Living Lakes partnership.

Mono Lake’s un ique ecological resources and international fame brought it to the attention of the Living Lakes group, which has just taken shape this year. The Mono Lake Committee was asked to join the Living Lakes partnership because of its success in protecting Mono Lake through cooperative solutions and its expertise in Internet communication. The Committee's World Wide Web site (www.monolake.org) has received acclaim for thorough presentation of complex information. The Committee’s web site will serve as a model for the Living Lakes web site.

Ultimately, the Living Lakes web site will offer information about each of the member lakes, detailed scientific information, and a forum for the public exchange of ideas relating to lakes and their watersheds. The web site (www.livinglakes.org) has just been initiated and will be rapidly expanded this fall.

The Living Lakes partnership has been selected to present an exhibition project for the World EXPO 2000, which will be held in Hanover, Germany, June 1–October 30, 2000. The German members of Living Lakes will develop the exhibits for EXPO 2000 and have chosen to feature Mono Lake.
