Cedar Hill Protected from
Inappropriate Development!

Mono Lake Private Lands Preserved as Wilderness
July 17, 2007 Press Release from the Wilderness Land Trust

Cedar Hill is the prominent flat-topped hill to the left of Negit Island in this view from
Old Marina. Prominent Ice-age shorelines on the side of Cedar Hill indicate that it
used to be an island in Lake Russell (Ice-age Mono Lake).

Remote Wild Portion of the Mono Basin Saved From Development
For several years the Mono Lake Committee has kept a careful watch on the pristine 3,700-acre parcel northeast of Mono Lake (click for PDF map). Known as Cedar Hill, the private property has been for sale for several years. Proposals for the property have included subdivision and development, a trade with the Bureau of Land Management, and most recently purchase by the highest bidder at auction.

Fortunately, today we can safely say Cedar Hill will no longer be threatened by intrusive development! In early 2006 the property was purchased by the Wilderness Land Trust, an organization that acquires private lands from willing owners and transfers them to public ownership. With this sale to the Wilderness Land Trust, Cedar Hill’s former owner made an effort to leave a positive legacy of preservation.

Cedar Hill Property Sets Precedent for Future Land Management in the Mono Basin
The eventual transfer of Cedar Hill into public ownership continues to support a positive vision of the Mono Basin’s future: one that includes scenic views, open spaces, wildlife habitat, and focused development. Cedar Hill accounts for 20% of the California private property in the Mono Basin, which will now be preserved as a natural area for generations to come. The Wilderness Land Trust’s purchase is building the foundation for smart land-use decisions in the Mono Basin.
