Bike-a-thon

BackNext

In 1980, Sally Gaines and a dozen
cyclists departed downtown Los
Angeles for the first Bike-A-Thon:
a fund-and awareness- raising
event. Taped to their bicycle
frames are vials of water filled
from the Los Angeles Department
of Water and Power's reflecting
pond located outside its
headquarters. Six days, and 350
grueling miles later, they emptied
their vials back into Mono Lake.
