Hwy 120 Mudslide and Fire

Mudslide on Highway 120 West between Lee Vining and the Tioga Pass Yosemite
entrance.
A severe thunderstorm on Wednesday 8/8/01 caused rocks and mud to cover the
road in several places just west of the winter closure
gate. It opened on Friday 8/17. The
following photos provided by Caltrans show the extent of the slide. Click

Wildfire on Highway 120 East between Hwy 395 (Lee Vining) and Hwy 6 (Benton).
A fast moving wildfire on Sunday 8/12 closed the road. The "Crater
Fire" burned about 5600 acres of brush and trees just west of the Mono Mills
area. South Tufa and Navy Beach were evacuated and Hwy 120 was closed. The road opened Wednesday 8/15 at 3pm.
The fire was still smoldering in places on Friday 8/17. The following
photos were sent to us by Joe Mozdzen. Note the burned trees on the
