Leatherman Tool
Recommended by former Office Director Jeff Darlington.

coverLeatherman 67010103 Wave with Deluxe Leather Sheath
This is the essential Office Director's tool. A Leatherman enables me to solve most problems at work without resorting to the dreaded "office supply" area, where I may or may not find what I need. The Leatherman is also handy for field work and after-hours recreation. The Wave has 17 tools, both knife blades lock for safety, and it comes with a leather sheath and 25-year guarantee. And important to note for backpackers: it weighs only 8 ounces!

Book: The RIVERKEEPERS: Two Activists Fight to Reclaim Our Environment as a Basic Human Right
Recommended by Information Specialist, Greg Reis

The Riverkeepers, by John Cronin, Robert Francis Kennedy
A story not unlike the story of Mono Lake, yet this time these enforcers of the Public Trust began by fighting pollution of the Hudson River. Fisherman stood up to the agencies that were allowing the squander of public resources and their livelihoods. Using grassroots patrols, science, public education through the media, and lawsuits forcing agencies to obey the law, their success is inspirational, and spread through the country as Riverkeeper programs popped up at other polluted waterways in need of protection and restoration. Who knows, after reading this book you may be inspired to protect the Public Trust in your backyard by starting a Riverkeeper program!

Book: Jitterbug Perfume
Recommended by Retail Operations Manager, Brett Pyle

Jitterbug Perfume, by Tom Robbins
Simply put, the best piece of fiction that I have ever read. Mr. Robbins creates the most wondrous metaphors you've ever read. This is an epic tale that starts in the middle ages and ends in Paris and involves perfume, immortality, Pan, love, time, and beets. If you've never read Tom, this is the place to start.

Book: The Immortal Class : Bike Messengers and the Cult of Human Power
Recommended by Information Specialist, Greg Reis

The Immortal Class, by Travis Culley
If you have ever ridden your bike in city traffic, you will be able to identify with the stories in this book. Travis Culley takes you on an exciting handlebar-gripping journey through the world of being a bicycle messenger in Chicago--the low pay, hard work, personal sacrifices, discrimination, injuries, accidents, camaraderie, adventures, sheer joy, and despair. It very eloquently discusses the negatives of cars (and what they do to our communities) and the positives of human-powered transportation. It reminds me of one summer when I exhausted myself every day as a motorcycle messenger in L.A., especially when he says, "Life sucks, but work is fun."

Book: 100 Selected Poems
Recommended by Retail Operations Manager, Brett Pyle

100 Selected Poems, by E.E. Cummings
His unusual punctuation and unique use of capitalization and syntax are what most people think of when they try to remember the one Cummings poem they read as part of a high school poetry overview. He of course does all this which makes you really think about what you are reading. But you will also find some of the most beautiful love poems ever written and the most creative use of language of any American poet.
