The Mono Lake Committee is committed to protecting the privacy of member records.

Joining the Mono Lake Committee online

  • We have a secure server which handles online memberships and renewals. When joining or renewing online, your address and credit card information will be protected by a secure connection.

  • June 1999 update: We have now improved our configuration so that your credit card information will always be handled over a secure connection. Previously, there was a possibility that we would need to retrieve the information over an insecure connection, but that is no longer the case. You can now submit credit card information with complete assurance that it will be transferred from you to us only over secure, encrypted connections.

"Yet, as many savvy Internet shoppers now know, the reality
is that it's actually much safer to enter your credit card
number on a secure on-line order form than it is to give your
credit card to a waiter at a restaurant. After all, what's to stop
the waiter from writing down your credit card number and
placing orders on the phone with it later? And research shows
that the rate of fraudulent purchases made by cell phones is
much higher than credit card fraud on the Net." --Internet ScamBusters

General privacy

  • When you complete your use of the Members' Section, you may want to close your Web browser to assure other users can't use the section under your name. This is especially important if you use a public computer to access the site. Also, the Members' Section uses your last name and membership number to confirm your membership, so until you customize your password (which you should do soon) you should try to keep your membership number somewhat confidential.

Your membership information

  • Your membership information, including name, address, and giving history are kept confidential by the Mono Lake Committee. Your information is transferred to and from our server over secure connections.

Your email address

  • Email is an efficient way of communicating, and we ask for your email address when you first sign on to the Members' Section. We will keep your email address confidential. We do not sell, rent, or trade email addresses with other organizations. We also do not do regular email mailings of our own at this time. In the future we expect to offer Mono Lake information services by email, and we will let you choose to receive them at that time. We may email you regarding your membership, or in the case of special Mono Lake action alerts.

Cookies

  • The Members' Section uses cookies (small files stored on your computer) to operate. They allow us to keep track of your Username and associated settings as you move to different pages in the Members' Section. If you have disabled cookies in your browser, you will not be able to access the Members' Section. Some people have concerns that cookies may be used to track your Internet browsing habits or for other uses. We don't have an opinion on this, but can say that we don't do that with our cookies. In fact, all of our cookies disappear from your computer when you close your browser, unless you choose to save your username and password to avoid signing on each time you visit the site. At the Mono Lake Website the bottom line is this: we build the entire site ourselves here at Mono Lake, and cookies were the easiest way for us to figure out how to create a special member-only area. If we come up with a better way that doesn't use cookies, we'll do it. We apologize for any inconvenience. See the options below for cookie management strategies.

  • To make sure your browser is set to accept cookies, if you use
Mozilla Firefox, click on the "Tools" menu, click on "Internet Options", click on "Privacy", click on the "Cookies" tab, and make sure "Allow sites to set cookies" is checked. If you use
Internet Explorer, go to the "Tools" menu, click on "Internet Options," click on the "Security" tab, then make sure the security level for the "Internet Zone" is NOT set on high--this would disable cookies.
    If you use
Netscape, click on the "Edit" menu, go to preferences, click on "Advanced," and under "Cookies" make sure "Disable cookies" is NOT checked.

  • If you want to visit the Members' Section but don't want to accept cookies from other Websites, you can (1) with Mozilla Firefox, click on "Tools", "Internet Options", "Privacy", "Cookies" tab, and the "Exceptions" button and add www.monolake.org to the list of allowed sites; (2) with Internet Explorer, click on "Tools, "Internet Options," "Security" tab, "Trusted Sites," make sure the security level is NOT set on high, then click on "Sites..." and add www.monolake.org to the list; (3) with Netscape, use the information in the paragraph above to turn on cookies while browsing the Mono Lake Website, but turn them off before leaving; (4) with Netscape, use the information in the paragraph above to make sure cookies are turned on, and in the same dialog box check "Warn me before accepting a cookie." This will allow you to control which cookies you accept.
